New Year 2006
It started with lots of huffing & puffing and planning going haywire & schedule going in the thrash can. The extremely mundane start of any DG venture. This time it was the new years’ party.
Against a lot of debated plans of conducting a get-together, and against the wishes of the few, we had planned for a new year’s bash at Shetu’s new house. “Its big”, “its cool”, “it rocks”, ”its empty” were some of the adjectives used to describe our new venue. To make this bash memorable (unlike our parties held hitherto), we had planned for games, quizzes, talk shows, and of course food & beverages.
In one of the previous parties, one of my good friend had the benevolence to make all our group members indulge in some intoxication(viz. flavors of the “angoor ki beti”). I can only say, she broke the ice…… MAHARANI KI JAY HO! To keep this ice broken, we vowed to include this “beti of angoor” in our event and make the evening more memorable. However, a pang of regret struck most of the us & they turned into saints. “Lets not get this habit in our group”, “How sic u people are. What re?? U drink daroo and all”, “Sagle bevede ahet baba….shhii!!!”…….And this went on till only me & Shetu were the lone soldiers standing to gracefully accept this BETI!! To bring daroo and get insulted by friends for consuming it , is an insult of the daroo, & not the consumers(this is the my philosophy which I made when I was with THE BETI last time.) GHAR UDHWASATA KARI DAROO, BATLI LA SPARSHA NAKA KAROO… was our new motto for the evening.
I was busy scribbling notes for the quiz which me n Mek had planned. But she had to quit due to professional reasons. So I was overloaded till 31st eve , taking questions, putting it into 100101011 format and taking back a printout (I wonder why I did not make the quiz directly on paper!!!)
On the big day, rather the big eve, everyone was running around collecting props, eatables, containers, vehicles, warm clothing (just like the Red Indians who collect woods before a hard winter). We were off schedule by at least 2 hrs and we started at 8:00 instead of the planned 6:00. There was a lot of running around on vehicles and we needlessly covered the length & breath of Thane. Finally on 3 bikes & 1 palio, we started with enthusiasm in our hearts & attitude in our heads.
As I had rightly heard, Shetu’s house was at the fag end of human civilization & going there was a picnic in itself. With the Majiwada & Kapurbawdi circles clogged with new year bashers & the regular eight & sixteen wheeler carriers, our bike got thru twists & turns , dodging jerking trucks & interleaving cars. But Mak was determined to “Make It Possible” and cutting thru the block of traffic jam, he took us… full speed. As we were nearing our venue, I thanked my rationale thinking for taking a jacket & head gear… the temperature there was at least 3-4 degrees lower; and it felt more so on the bike.
Shetu’s house was indeed empty , clean, well equipped & SPACIOUS. I was already anticipating the fun we were going to have there. We started of with starters(pretty logical) & move thru the main course. But in between, the jumping and dancing we did was equivalent to an hour’s session at your local gym. Bisu made us play langdi & jhatapati. Keddu & Shetu were the dance bar boy couple of the eve and Sid was the dance bar boy single of the eve. (I guess, that was an expression of their latent desires which manifested when the new years atmosphere got on them!!)
Unlike every year, food was not a major event & people finished it off without much complaints.
As the evening progressed, and we finished our dinner, we had a wonderful round of LADY-IN-PINK (A much hyped mocktail by Sid n Aks. It was a combination of ice-cream, strawberry crush & sprite. It was worth the wait).
That was when the midnight happened. We had some celebration. When the primitive man did not know to express his joy, he howled, shrieked, jumped, ran around the fire, made animal-like sounds. That was when he did not know the cultured way ofexpression. What we did at 00:00 was pretty much the same.
The much awaited ritual took place. Bisu distributed the gifts he had brought for us….. soft toys, caps, T shirts, jewelry, et al…… and a whole lot of chocolates for everyone. Everyone was happy about it. I guess this was the first event of its kind in the group.
When the food & beverages had settled & lethargy started to creep in, the candid game-shows started.. Softdrink with Sid. I was one of the four to be selected along with Mak Pri & Gau…….. Pri was the unexpected one.
I thought I was pretty confident & clear about my answers. I heard some pretty shocking answers from other three. After so much “fun”, we took a lengthy quiz. People appreciated it very much. Ked/Sid/Aks‘s team was very lucky in answering questions.
We had another game where people connected with each other….literally.
It was morning by then and Sid left for his trip to Alibaug. We did some calculation about the expenses, cleared up the mess and were ready to leave. That’s when the pending item of DG’s events happened. We had a small argument. Some had to leave and me n Shetu wanted to see the new years sunrise. So we waited & saw the sunrise. I appreciated Shetu’s decision to stand by his decision. The sunrise was amazing…. I saw the big ball of fire gradually peeping from the horizon. Its hues transforming from deep magenta to orange to finally a bright yellow. With the heat increasing, the fog began to rise & move; covering the landscape with a blanket of white.
I made a vow, to keep all my resolutions this year. One can make resolutions in front of the rising sun.. cause for one it is the eternal truth ….. and for mother earth & human civilization, it is GOD.
Shetu misplaced his scooter key. We had to take a ric home.
A memorable event after a long time…….A memorable NEW YEARS EVE!!!
